History

A SHORT HISTORY OF THE SOCIETAS LITURGICA

Societas Liturgica came into existence through the initiative of Wiebe Vos, a pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church. In 1962 he founded Studia Liturgica, "an international ecumenical quarterly for liturgical research and renewal." In 1965 Vos called a conference of twenty-five liturgists from Europe and North America at the Protestant community of Grandchamp, in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. With J. J. von Allmen as Chair, the conference discussed Christian Initiation and resolved to found a Societas Liturgica, "an association for the promotion of ecumenical dialogue on worship, based on solid research, with the perspective of renewal and unity."
The foundation meeting of the Societas Liturgica took place at Driebergen in The Netherlands in 1967. That meeting studied the Constitution on the Liturgy of the Second Vatican Council as well as recent work on worship by the World Council of Churches' Faith and Order. Thereafter the Societas has held congresses at two year intervals.
Most of the papers delivered at meetings of the Societas have been published in English in Studia Liturgica.
There are now more than 400 members of Societas Litugica. The international and ecumenical character of the society is illustrated by the list of its successive presidents and Council members.

SOCIETAS LITURGICA BYLAWS

NAME

1. The name of the Association shall be: Societas Liturgica, hereinafter referred to as the Societas.

AIM

2. The Societas shall:

a) encourage research in the field of worship and allied subjects, as well as the pastoral implications of such research;
b) facilitate the exchange of the results of this research and other liturgical knowledge;
c) seek to deepen the mutual understanding of the various liturgical traditions;
d) seek ways to make clear the relevance of liturgy in the contemporary world.

ACTIVITIES

3. This aim shall be pursued by:

a) holding general meetings of the Societas;
b) calling, if desired, smaller consultations or wider conferences;
c) promoting publications which serve the purpose of the Societas.

ORGANIZATION

4. The affairs of the Societas shall be managed by a Council consisting of a Chair, Secretary, Treasurer, and six other members, of whom three shall retire at each general meeting. All members of the Council shall be elected at the general meeting. The Chair shall not be eligible for immediate re-election as Chair.
5. This Council has power to act on behalf of the Societas between general meetings.
6. Other committees, needed for the activities of the Societas, may be appointed either by the general meeting or by the Council.

7. Membership shall be open to:

a) those teaching or doing research in liturgical and related studies;
b) those who are actively engaged in official liturgical commissions;
c) those who are making significant contributions to the liturgical life of the churches;
d) such other persons as the Societas may wish to invite.

8. All applications for membership shall be sent to the Secretary of the Societas with the written recommendation of two of its members. For the application to be accepted the approval of the majority of the Council shall be required.

MEMBERSHIP FEES

9. The fees shall be determined by the Council.
Adopted at the Foundation Meeting of the Societas Liturgica held at Driebergen, 26-30 June 1967.

Ammendments

 1.  The following amendments to the Membership section was approved at the Paris 17-19 January 1998 meeting of the Council

V.                   Membership

a.        Membership shall be open to:

 i.      those teaching or doing research in liturgical and related studies
 ii.      those who are actively engaged in official liturgical commissions,
iii.      those who are making significant contributions to the liturgical life of the churches, and
iv.      such other persons as the Societas may wish to invite.

b.       All  applications for membership shall be sent to the secretary of the Societas with the written recommendation of two of its members.  For the application to be accepted the approval of the majority of the Council will be required.

c.        There shall be three classifications of membership:  Active, Inactive, and Honourably Retired.

 i.      Active:  A person elected to membership by Council is considered an active member upon participation in the Societas and payment of annual dues.  If more than two years’ dues are unpaid Council shall remove the person from membership after notification.

 ii.      Inactive:  A person who through illness or other circumstance is prevented from participation as an active member (including paying full annual dues) may apply to Council for “Inactive” status for one year.  An inactive member does not pay full annual dues and is listed in the membership list as “Inactive”.  An inactive member receives the Newsletter and other mailings but does not receive Studia Liturgica.  An inactive member may return to active membership by giving notice of their intention to return to active membership and by paying their full annual dues.  Council shall review all such requests annually.

iii.      Honourably Retired:  A person who is officially retired my become an “Honourably Retired” member.  Honourably retired members may vote in Business Meetings of the Societas, receive all mailings, are welcome at Congress meetings, and may serve in office and on committees of the Societas if so elected.  Dues for Honourably Retired members shall be approximately one-third of those of “Active” member dues.

d.       Couples who are both “Active” members may upon request choose to receive only one subscription to Studia Liturgica.  Annual dues for each are reduced accordingly.  The yearly amount of reduction to be determined by the Editor-in-chief of Studia Liturgica and approved by Council

VI.                 Membership Fees

a.        Membership fees shall be determined by the Council.

b.       Scholarship funds are available to those with special financial needs, but each member is expected to pay something toward their annual dues and participation in a Congress regardless of membership category.

Amendment to the Bylaws: Organization:  That the Societas begin the practice of electing a President-Elect who would serve for two years and then assume the office of President:  Approved:  Los Gatos 11-13 February 2000
